Cranberry Sauce Recipe

cranberry-sauceI am trying to be more natural and organic with my cooking. I find that foods that don’t come from a can taste much better.

The holidays will be here before we know it, and I want to be ready. A few weeks ago I decided to make homemade cranberry sauce. My family loved this sauce. It had much more flavor than the kind we usually have. This year my holiday table will not feature canned shaped cranberry sauce.

Ingredients:

  • 1 bag 12 ounce bag of flash frozen cranberries. Fresh is better if you can find them.
  • 1 large apple diced
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • Sugar (personal preference) how sweet do you want it. I used ¾ of a cup.

Directions:

  • Simmer cranberries in water for about 20 minutes on low heat. You want them to be mushy.
  • Bring to a boil and add apples. I added the apple to help the sauce not be as tart. I also usually do an “apple dressing” and I thought the apples would complement the dressing.
  • Drain excess water out of the pan once the fruit is done to your liking.
  • Add orange juice to the fruit mixture and bring to a boil.
  • Once at a boil slowly add sugar to taste, keeping the mixture at a boil.
  • Continue to stir sauce.
  • Once sauce reaches desired thickness it is done.

This cranberry sauce may be served hot or cold and freezes well for future use.  To freeze place desired amount in a zip lock bag, label, and place in freezer. Defrost the same day you wish to use it in the future.
