In a blink….

There are only two lasting bequests we can hope to give our children. One of these is roots, the other, wings.- Hodding Carter.

On the first day of school I saw a mom taking pictures of her small child in front of the local elementary school. It was likely a photo of his very first day of Kindergarten. I glanced over at my own son, and thought, it has all  happened in a blink.  He went from being a little boy to an almost grown man. My next thought was, “before I know it he will be in college, married, and have a family of his own.”

My little boy is now 15 and a sophomore in high school. This is a tricky age not only for kids but for parents. He wants to be independent and make choices, but he still needs guidance. Our instinct is to be over protective and to shelter him. However, David and I realize that we do need to give him a little room to spread his wings. He needs to be able to demostrate to us that he is responsible and trustworthy. It is a hard act to balance.

We have raised him thus far to the best of our abilities and we will continue to do so. We have helped him to establish a standard of faith, ethics, and morality by which to live his life. I am proud of him and his accomplishments. My hope is that in the coming years he will stay the course and become all that God has intended him to be.

I am almost afraid to blink…. because before I know it Madilyn will be all grown up too.
