Nothing is more memorable than a smell. One scent can be unexpected, momentary and fleeting, yet conjure up a childhood summer beside a lake in the mountains- Diane Ackerman
I have truly enjoyed my weekends this July and August. My family and I have found ourselves at the lake a lot. I love boarding the boat, getting sun lotion on, and making sure Madilyn is safe and secure as we pull away from the dock. The wind in our hair, the sun on our faces, and the high pitched screams of joy coming from Madilyn as we race down the lake is priceless. You can’t beat a swim and picnic at the lake on a hot Georgia summer Saturday.
This past weekend I found myself remembering a trip I got to go on with my grandmother and several other extended family members when I was younger. We went camping at the lake. A smell brought back this childhood memory. It made me wonder what my kids will remember about our trips to the lake. Many years from now will the smell of a lake bring back fond memories of lazy summer days spent having picnics, swimming, and cruising the lake on a yellow boat?
This weekend I found myself really experiencing the sounds, smells, and sights that were all around me. I am thankful that God has provided us such a beautiful world in which to live. I am thankful that we have the means in which to enjoy the creation that he made and to make some wonderful family memories. I am thankful that a smell can bring back a good memory from long ago.
