Text messages, tweets and facebook comments abound with those who preface what they are saying with 3 letters calling Gods name when it is not necessary. Sometimes the entirety of their status update is just the three letters that when put together make me cringe.
When we misuse God’s name we trivialize his name and make it insignificant. Christians need to stop causally and inappropriately using the name of God. Those who call themselves Christians should be diligent in honoring his name at all times.
We are more likely to use politically correct language as not to offend others than we are to obey the third commandment of our Lord and Savior.
Verses for Reflection:
- “You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name (Exodus 20: 7)
- “Jesus said, “But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment” (Matthew 12:36).
I really wish people would heed the words found in the Bible and quit taking the name of the Lord in vain. If you say his name or use an acronym that has his name in it let it be for his praise not your inability to find another word or acronym that expresses your feelings. In our home we do not use these offensive phrases, and we are teaching our children to honor the name of the Lord at all times, even when texting, twittering and facebooking.
