Smells and Memories

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011

Nothing is more memorable than a smell. One scent can be unexpected, momentary and fleeting, yet conjure up a childhood summer beside a lake in the mountains-  Diane Ackerman

I have truly enjoyed my weekends this July and August. My family and I have found ourselves at the lake a lot. I love boarding the boat, getting sun lotion on, and making sure Madilyn is safe and secure as we pull away from the dock.  The wind in our hair, the sun on our faces, and the high pitched screams of joy coming from Madilyn as we race down the lake is priceless. You can’t beat a swim and picnic at the lake on a hot Georgia summer Saturday. (more…)

But she’s so pretty…

Recently I was at a baby shower and the conversation turned to child birth. One of the ladies asked me about Madilyn and how I was able to get back to work so soon after her birth. Madilyn was just over two weeks old when I started my current job. Her arrival was very unexpected and I had just gotten a new job, so it was impossible to take any time off. (more…)

In a blink….

There are only two lasting bequests we can hope to give our children. One of these is roots, the other, wings.- Hodding Carter.

On the first day of school I saw a mom taking pictures of her small child in front of the local elementary school. It was likely a photo of his very first day of Kindergarten. I glanced over at my own son, and thought, it has all  happened in a blink.  He went from being a little boy to an almost grown man. My next thought was, “before I know it he will be in college, married, and have a family of his own.” (more…)

Slowing Down

Saturday, July 30th, 2011

After five years going non-stop trying to be super mom, wife, teacher, and honor graduate student I have come to realize that it REALLY is okay to slow down. Most of us are guilty of rushing through our days and not taking time to enjoy life. We have a drive that forces us to move at the speed of light just to get to the next item on our to do list. Who am I (Part 3)

Sunday, June 12th, 2011

If you know me you have more than likely defined who I am based on your relationship, perceptions, and interactions with me. Those people reading this who don’t know me will more than likely form a definition of me based on what they find on this blog. (more…)

Who am I (Part 2)

Friday, June 10th, 2011

Who am I? The words most often used to describe me are:  daughter, wife, mom, adoptive mom, teacher, student, and Christian. These words may define parts of my life but they do not make up the total of who I really am. These words do not get to the core of what makes me me. They do not tell anyone about the deeper parts of me, my personality, or my passions. These words just describe a small portion of who I am. (more…)

Who am I? (Part 1)

Thursday, June 9th, 2011

I love the show CSI, and I especially like the theme song, “Who are you…” Once I hear that short intro to the show it is hard to get the song out of my head. Life moves so fast that who we are can change with each passing day or with one defining moment in time. Sometimes I wish a team of experts like those portrayed on CSI could come in and examine my life and just tell me who I am. (more…)

I would like to thank all of you who have kept me and my family in your thoughts and prayers during the past few weeks. I am feeling much better but still have a ways to go before I am back to 100% health. I really appreciate all of the friends who have offered kind thoughts, prayers, meals, and other help during this time. I am amazed by the people who have made me feel loved and cared for during this difficult and painful time. (more…)

Tossed Salad

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

This past week we harvested the first vegetables from our garden. We had lettuce and spinach. We had enough lettuce for several tossed salads and enough spinach for omelets, salads, and as a steamed vegetable for dinner. Last year all of the lettuce we planted tasted horrible. For some reason it had a bitter taste that was really overwhelming. This year we do not have that problem and it taste just fine. (more…)
