Working Mom Grocery Shopping Tips

“The odds of going to the store for a loaf of bread and coming out with only a loaf of bread are three billion to one.” – Erma Bombeck

My most dreaded chore of the week is grocery shopping. I sometimes feel overwhelmed at the task of taking an empty cart and filling it with things my family will eat during the next week. Grocery shopping is also difficult because I have totally changed the way my family eats so that we can be a healthy family. I have adjusted some of my shopping habits in order to reduce the dislike I have for grocery shopping.

My Tips~ hey they work for me

  • Limit shopping trips to once a week. Multiple trips to the store each week add to your grocery bill and waste valuable time.
  • Plan your meals for the entire week. Having a plan helps to reduce stress over meals later in the week. Also, meal planning is a MUST if you are trying to eat healthy meals. If you fail to plan you may find yourself turning to unhealthy choices.
  • Make a list. I used to shop without a list. Shopping from memory was fine before my mind became so cluttered with other information that I can not remember my entire list anymore.  I keep a running list on my refrigerator and add items to it as I discover I am running low or out of an item. This helps reduce the amount of time it takes me to compile my list, and helps to ensure I don’t forget to buy the items we need. Every time I try to shop without a list I forget something that is needed for one of the planned weekly meals.
  • Shop on Friday night. Yes, I just said that. All the cool kids are doing it.  I used to dread shopping when I did it on Saturday. I hated getting up and getting ready to go shopping. Saturday grocery shopping ate into my day off. Several weeks ago I started shopping on Friday and I noticed a difference in how I spent the rest of my weekend. I also noticed that I could find better cuts of meat on Friday night. It seems like the butcher stocks the meat counters on Friday to be ready for the onslaught of Saturday morning shoppers.
