Healthy Drinking

waterI think that most of us know that water is very important for the health of our bodies. I really do not like water. However, I have learned that with my body drinking water and lots of it key to loosing weight and having nice skin. Drinking water often becomes a chore and an inconvenience and even boring. I have come up with several strategies that help me to be sure to get enough water on a daily basis.

My number one strategy is to prepare my water the night before for use the next day. Being prepared ensures that I drink enough water each day. Preparing my water the night before helps my mornings to run more smoothly.  I have found that if I fail to prepare my water bottles the previous night, I often do not have time to do it prior to going to work. On the days that I am not prepared my water intake is no where near what it needs to be.

During the day I…

Drink water first

  • The first thing I do in the morning when I get out of bed is to drink several ounces of water. My goal is to drink at least 20 ounces before leaving my house to go to work.
  • When I feel thirsty I reach for water, not coffee and not soda.
  • I do not allow myself any other drink until I have finished off my water for the day.

Flavor it up

  • I add a few slices of fruit to help add a little flavor to my water (sliced strawberries or apples).  These fruit slices infuse the water with flavor. You do not need a fancy diffuser water bottle. I just put the fruit and water in a normal water bottle.
  • At times I will add a few drops of peppermint or vanilla extract. I have found that these two flavors help to cut my cravings.
  • I avoid store bought water flavorings that are often full of chemicals and calories.
  • I use glass water bottles because fruits and extracts can leave a residue in plastic bottles.

Meal Time

  • While preparing breakfast, I make sure to drink, drink, drink.
  • 30 Minutes before lunch I make sure I have finished off at least 40 ounces of water. For me that is 2 bottles because I use 20 oz bottles.
  • When the after lunch munchies hit, I grab a bottle and drink. My goal is to drink  least 60 ounces before leaving work for the day.
  • While preparing dinner I make sure to drink some more.

Following these guidelines have helped me to increase my daily water intake and have helped me to stay hydrated. I actually crave water, and do not dread having to gulp down so many ounces each day.

Do you have any tips or tricks for ensuring you have proper water intake daily?
