“Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.~ Genesis 11:4
I think many people, myself included are guilty of building towers in order to make a name for themselves. Our wants and desires become so consuming that we don’t leave any room for God to work in our lives. We become so obsessed with our “towers” that we can no longer focus on God.
Different phases of my life have brought different towers. Building a family, getting a higher education, progressing in my career, all became so consuming that I was an emotional and spiritual wreck. These goals were my towers. These things became a distraction to me and affected my personal and spiritual relationships.
I am striving to become less like the tower builders and more like the woman of God that he wants me to be. It is hard and it takes almost daily reminders of what is truly important in my life.
I think we all need to ask ourselves on occasion, “What towers am I building that are taking my focus away from God and his desires for my life?”
