Bagged Lettuce Tip

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

I subscribe to a blog by Laura Webber called  Sharpen Your Scissors.    A few weeks ago she posted a few helpful hints on how to keep your bagged lettuce/salad mix fresh.  Since reading her tips I have extended the life span of my bagged salads by about two weeks.  It has been amazing.  In the past I have ended up throwing out unused lettuce therefore wasting our hard earned money.

Laura has a lot of great tips for extending product life span, coupon use and great recipes.  She is actually the person who got me on my coupon kick.  Her husband  David and my husband started working together several years ago.  When David (mine) started talking about all of her savings and stuff I thought “Yeah right.” Well I read her blog for a few weeks and then jumped right into coupon shopping and started saving a lot of money.  I am not an expert like Laura, but I am getting there.  The only problem is she does not live in the same area as I do so some of the stores and sales she finds are not the same ones that I have access to here.  I still love reading about her finds, and her tips are always more than helpful.

My blog will NEVER develop into the type of blog that Sharpen Your Scissors is, because that is not the goal of my blog.  I only post about my savings to encourage others to be better stewards of their money.  Once in a while I may do a post like this to direct readers to sources of information that may help them to better spend their hard earned money.

So how do you extend the life of your bagged lettuce/salad mix?  Basically all you have to do is open the lettuce when you get it home and store it layered in a bowl or other container with a lid.  Place paper towels between the layers to soak up any moisture.  I have saved a lot just by learning this tip. Visit Laura’s blog to learn more.

Quality Time

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

When I planted my garden I never dreamed that working in the garden would be a source of spending quality time with my almost 14 year old son.  However, over the course of the past few weeks we have worked side by side in the garden and have had a lot of conversations that have given me a glimpse into the young man he is becoming.  At first he complained about the work, but over the past few days he has worked without complaint and has even helped a few times without being asked to do so.

So many times as a working mom, wife and college student I find myself spending time with my family that is not quality but quantity.  Sometimes our time is spent with so many distractions that we do not really connect as a family or even as individuals.

David and I make sure to spend quality time with each other usually with planned date nights.  It is easy to spend one on one quality time with Madilyn– reading books, playing with play dough or swinging on the swing.  However, Caleb is a teenage boy and it is hard to get his attention in order to spend time with him. He also does not let us know when he needs us, which makes it even more difficult to spend quality time together.

Working with Caleb in the garden with no technology, work or little sister distractions has been eye opening.  I realize that all too soon he will be a full grown man making his own decisions and life choices.  He is no longer my little boy, but a young man with hopes, thoughts and dreams of his own.  Even though he is a young man he still needs to have some one on one quality time with his mom and dad.

What are you doing to spend quality time with your husband and children?

Savings this week 6/5

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

Every penny saved counts.  This was an awesome week for grocery shopping at Publix.  I was running low on rice and cereal and was able to stock up on both.  It was also a good week to stock up on ziplock bags.  My total before coupons and BOGO was $187.53, I paid $68.75. (more…)

Farmers Market

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

Today I hit up the Canton Farmers Market.  This was opening weekend for the market. There were not many vendors there, but I have been told that as more vegetables ripen  more vendors will be there to sell.  I visited the farmers market almost every weekend last summer.  I loved the prices and the taste of the home grown veggies.  I am hoping that my vegetables will grow so that I will not have to frequent the market as often.

My weekly grocery shopping trip helped to restock the pantry. We were running low on several items so I was glad to see sales on cereal and pasta. My total grocery bill came in at $232.52 however after coupons and buy on get one deals I only paid $56.75. Not too shabby. We needed a few items that I did not have coupons for so those pushed my total up a little bit. (more…)

First Fruits

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

Tonight with our dinner we had a salad that included some of the first fruits from our garden– radishes. Caleb and Madilyn did not like the taste of them. I thought they tasted fine, I am not sure what David thought. (more…)

It happens to ….

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

I hate it when people say, “It happens to a lot of people.” Well those words do not make it better, they do not comfort and those words do not help those mourning the loss of a child. I have found that the people who say this when discussing miscarriage or infertility have ZERO experience with either. This phrase is usually used to end the conversation and to dismiss the feelings that I and other couples are experiencing.

Notice I said couples, miscarriage and infertility is not a women’s issue, it is a couples issue. In many cases women can find someone to talk to that understands the gravity of their feelings. However, men have a harder time finding someone to talk to about these kinds of issues. I am thankful but sad that David has a friend to talk to about these issues. Thankful because he needs someone to talk with, but sad because this other couple is riding the same emotional roller coaster that we are riding.

Just when I think I am doing better something triggers my emotions. Last night I was watching Army Wives, and you guessed it one of the main characters had a miscarriage. The episode portrayed the feelings of both the man and women in a wonderful way. They acknowledged that a miscarriage was a loss of life that is not only physically painful but emotionally painful for both of the grieving parents.

In one scene the husband said “it happens” the wife Roxy said “its never happened to me before.” This type of tragedy is one that we are not prepared for, it is one that in the past has been hush hush and not talked about or acknowledged. It is a shame that so many people have had to face this type of loss alone. It is a further shame that the loss is not recognized by family and friends and that it is something that people think should just be forgotten. Well that is easier said than done. I can not forget the baby that should have been born just a few weeks from now.

Being like Joshua and Caleb

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Recently I have been studying Numbers 13 and 14. These two chapters deal with the spies that were sent out in advance of the people of Israel to scout out the land God had promised. When the spies returned to the people to report on the land they reported that indeed the land was good but they would not be able to overtake those who currently laid claim to the land. However, 2 of the men Joshua and Caleb insisted that God was with them and the land could be theirs. (more…)

Getting back in the Groove

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

For about 9 months I was in the groove- I was a coupon shopping saving freak. Then something happened, I guess you can call it life and I relasped back into my old ways of grocery shopping. Which meant shopping with no list, no coupons and just buying whatever I wanted to buy. Of course with the old habits the old dread of grocery shopping, and the shock of the bill at the end of the trip returned.

Now that I am feeling better I decided that I needed to get back into the groove and start saving money again on my weekly shopping trips. Today my bill totaled $167.45, after coupons and store specials I paid $56.25. Not a bad start to my getting back in the groove.

My best deals today were:

Dial soap at .33 per bar.
Nivea Body Wash FREE
Betty Crocker Potatoes for .29 per box
Halls Cough Drops for .52 per bag
